My Presidential Pledge

Honoring the inauguration of Barack Obama, a new celebrity-packed video has been released titled The Presidential Pledge.  In this video the glamorous Hollywood elite promise to make our planet better by doing little things like turning off lights, or with grander schemes such as freeing people from slavery throughout the world.

Most of these individual pledges are all well and good, but wouldn't these people have been able to do this when Bush was in office?  The fact that Obama being elected is the catalyst seems a little strange to me, but it isn't what troubles me about this video.

The problem with these pledges is that they all fall under the umbrella of - as Demi Moore puts it at the end - pledging "to be a servant to our president."  In the US, our politicians are supposed to be servants to us, not the other way around.  Accepting a leader as master sounds like totalitarian rule to me.  Of course if people were really ready to accept totalitarian rule we would probably have patriotic songs that focus on worshiping our leader rather than celebrating the country itself as we see in this video of the Hitler Youth.

While these children aren't claiming Obama to be their Lord, there is still an eerie quality to these songs praising the politician himself rather than the republic he represents.
Part of the Obama inauguration ceremonies this year include another form of hero worship with Ron Clark Academy children singing their new song titled, "Dear Obama."

From Wikipedia:  "Often [in personality cults], a single leader becomes associated with this revolutionary transformation, and comes to be treated as a benevolent "guide" for the nation, without whom the transformation to a better future cannot occur."

When the country swears in our 44th President tomorrow, instead of singing songs in praise of our new glorious leader, I will pledge to never join this cult of personality.
