In 2008 the state of Wyoming began requiring all high school juniors to take the ACT in order to help measure college-readiness. This year Sheridan High School had 25 percent of its students "college-ready", and meeting all four subject-area benchmark scores. That's compared to 18 percent of Wyoming students overall.

Johnson County Commission

Emergency Management Coordinator for Johnson County, Marilyn Connelly, put in a request to the County Commissioners at last week's meeting for them to authorize the White Powder Response Plan, and to authorize a preparedness exercise to be staged at the courthouse at a future date of her choosing.

The Johnson County Commissioners, at last week's meeting, voted unanimously to accept a Public Health Emergency Preparedness grant from the State of Wyoming.

The new Buffalo/Johnson County Recycling Center will have to wait at least a few more days to get power, according to Johnson County Commissioner Smokey Wildeman, who attended an meeting Monday to update the entities involved in the project.

At a work session Monday the Sheridan City Council received an update from Sheridan County Suicide Prevention Coalition Chair Vanessa Hastings, who discussed some of the findings from a 2007 report from Mental Health America and Thompson Healthcare.

This latest heatwave in the Sheridan region may be one of the last of the summer as fall isn't too far off on the calender.

City of Sheridan Planning Commission member Kay Pearson resigned last week, which prompted the Sheridan City Council to hold a special meeting Monday to make a temporary appointment to the commission. The Council unanimously appointed Jason Szwec to a term of no more than 60 days.

Young adults looking to obtain their GED and or for enrollment in the SCOPE program can now go to the same place. Following the retirement of Sheridan College's Adult Basic Education Director Robin West, her ABE position was absorbed by SCOPE Coordinator Sarah Riehn.
