Full Buck,Thunder or Hay Moon? - take your pick

Posted in

Native Americans kept track of the seasons by giving them names to each recurring full moon. For July three meanings have been handed down. Full Buck Moon because male deer grow new antlers, Full Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are most frequent this time of year and the Full Hay Moon because it's around this time that farmers harvest, bale and stow hay for the winter.

This near full moon photo was taken at 8:20pm Sunday near Big Horn but technically the full moon occurs around 12:17pm MDT on Monday, July 22nd.
