FOOTBALL - The Big Horn Rams and NSI Wolves got the 2008 high school football regular season started last night. The Rams were installed as the #1-ranked pre-season AA football team. The Rams got off to a good start with Matt Metzger returning the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, and the Rams were on their way to a 33-0 win. Head coach Bert Dow says it was nice to get off to a quick start. The Rams had some turnover problems and put the ball on the ground several times, but the defense was tough and didn’t allow the Wolves to get much going offensively. Overall, Dow was pleased with their play (cart)(77x). On the NSI side, it’s a typical start to their season – lots of inexperienced players got their first taste of varsity football. Even though the score was lopsided, head coach Kurt Abernatha says the players did some good things (cart)(78x). And after the Wolves get a few more games under their belt, they’ll be fine (cart)(79x). Next week the Rams host a rematch of last year’s state title game with Riverside, and the Wolves will play at Guernsey.
Tonight the Tongue River Eagles open their season on the road. The Eagles play at Wright, and the game can be heard live on 105.9 FM ESPN Radio. Ron Richter will have the action for you; kickoff is set for 7 o’clock.
The Sheridan Broncs open the newly renovated Homer Scott Stadium tonight, hosting Miles City, Montana. The Cowboys won their season opener at Dickenson, North Dakota last week. Broncs head coach, Don Julian, says the Broncs are ready for the Cowboys (cart)(80x). On the offensive side of the ball, the Broncs return starting quarterback Austin Woodward and a solid corps of running backs and receivers (cart)(81x). And Julian says with it being the first game on the new field and the updated stadium amenities, it’s going to be a big night, not only for the team but for everyone in attendance (cart)(82x). We will have the game live for you on AM 1410 KWYO. The First Federal Pre-game Show will open the broadcast at 6:30, with kickoff set for 7 o’clock.
Tomorrow, the Wyoming Cowboys play the Air Force Academy in Laramie. You can hear the game live on AM 1410 KWYO – pre-game starts at 12:30, with kickoff set for 1:30.
And the Denver Broncos play at Oakland Monday night live on AM 1410 KWYO – broadcast time is set for 7 o’clock.
CROSS-COUNTRY - The Sheridan High School cross-country teams were in Spearfish, South Dakota yesterday. The Lady Broncs had a great day winning the team title, and for the second consecutive week, Lela Carpenter and Dana Morin went one / two in the individual standings. The Broncs finished 4th, with top finisher Dylan Morin in 6th place – that’s his second top ten finish in two races this season. Next week, the Broncs and Lady Broncs run at the Gillette Invitational.
VOLLEYBALL - In volleyball action this week, Sheridan, Big Horn and Tongue River all open play today at the Gillette Invitational.
