College Eyes Facility Update

Northern Wyoming Community College District trustees will receive an updated master plan for Sheridan College in April, outlining needs to upgrade aging facilities.

College President Dr. Paul Young and Vice President Cheryl Heath discussed needs for four of the college's buildings during the trustees' regular meeting last night. Those included the Technical Education Center, Science and Ag Center, Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome and the Whitney Building's fine arts wing.

Dr. Young said the college has many aging facilities all built around the same time, from 1975 to 1985, and the buildings are becoming functionally obsolete at the same time. The tech center was built in 1977, the Science and Ag Center and Golden Dome both in 1982, and the Whitney Fine Arts wing in 1978. During public comments, Sheridan College students told trustees they enjoy their classes and admire their instructors, but spoke of overcrowded classrooms and, in the Whitney wing, a lack of recital and practice space.

The vice president told trustees that Sheridan College currently serves more than 2,000 students, compared to just over 1,300 students 10 years ago. She said the college's enrollment is projected to grow to 3,000 by the end of this decade. She said the college's master plan, adopted in 2010, must by state statute be reviewed, updated and submitted to the Wyoming Community College Commission every five years.

Plans presented at last night's meeting will be finalized and submitted to the trustees in April. Board Chairwoman Kati Sherwood will not be able to attend the meeting in March.

The Northern Wyoming Community College District administers Sheridan College and its campuses in Gillette and Johnson County.
