A local doctor says self acceptance is the key to recovery from mental illness. Leslie Stratmoen has the story.

Self-esteem and identity become confusing for people suffering from mental illness, according to Dr. Victor Ashear. He talked about how a catastrophic event or loss of a loved one or one’s own abilities are difficult to overcome, during a presentation given this week to a gathering of people from local social service agencies.

He then offered, as a tool, his book called “Self Acceptance,” which he explained was developed based on his 30 years of experience working as a psychologist for VA in Sheridan.

He went on to give examples on how to use the book as a tool with clients.

Following his presentation, a woman in the group said she’d given his book as a Christmas present and the recipient was already finding it useful in his practice.
