DWS Launches New Safety Division

The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services is expanding their safety expertise and resources to employers in State by deploying a new unit, the DWS Workers’ Compensation Safety and Risk Unit. Through this resource, developed by DWS Standards and Compliance staff and input from Governor Matt Mead, Wyoming businesses and public sector employers, at the request of the employer, will be offered safety advisors who provide free expert safety and health advice.

To make this Unit possible, DWS recommissioned nine Wyoming Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Consultation staff members to the new team. This new team will offer some resources similar to what OSHA does and some that are different. For instance the staff will conduct health and safety surveys to help employers recognize and remedy safety hazards in their workplace while still avoiding fines and penalties, similar to OSHA. They differ from OSHA in that the staff will bypass time-consuming federal requirements, which add more constraints and limit the services the DWS can provide. The staff levels for the OSHA division will be maintained and complete work required by the federal government.
