A local detective who's served for nearly a decade on the Sheridan police force received honors, recently.

Detective Jerome Smith was named peace officer of the year by the Sheridan Elks Lodge No. 520.

Lt. Tom Ringley said Smith received the award, in part, for his work on two high profile cases.

According to information released by the police department, Smith was a detention deputy for 11 years with the Sheridan County Sheriff's Office, prior to becoming an officer with the police department in Sheridan.
