The honor guard of American Legion Post 7 raised the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance as the Volunteers of America dedicated the organization's new Veterans Honor Garden Thursday night.

Rob Miller, chairman of the VOA board of directors, talked about how the garden became a reality.

Other speakers during the event were Chief Operating Officer Heath Steel, and VOA CEO Jeff Holsinger. Holsinger said the word that came to his mind was gratitude.

Steel said this year alone, the VOA will serve over 800 veterans' households. Also speaking was Dave King, general manager of Sheridan's Home Depot, which partnered with the VOA and the Home Depot Foundation to help create the garden.

Holsinger also read the names of more than 20 veterans currently listed on a plaque of honorees, and said it’s the hope of the VOA to continue to add names to the garden each year.
