About 65 to 70 Special Olympics athletes ran a loop from Sheridan's Whitney Park down Main Street and back Monday morning during this year's Flame of Hope run.

Boot Hill, a Sheridan County sheriff's deputy and liaison between Special Olympics and local law enforcement, said the torch carried by the athletes signifies the Olympic Flame that will be carried into Laramie later this week to officially start this year's state Special Olympics games.

He said that allows more inclusion with the local athletes. He said many of the local athletes got to hold the torch and run a block or so with the torch this year.

This year's Special Olympics games start with opening ceremonies Thursday and will continue through Saturday.
