Forest Officials Remind People to ‘Know Before You Go’

With the Memorial Day holiday approaching, officials with the Bighorn National Forest are gearing up for the kick-off to the summer outdoor recreation season. Many campgrounds have begun opening up, with more slated for Friday and the coming weeks. Bighorn National Forest Public Information Officer Susie Douglas says people need to keep in mind the conditions of the roads and trails when recreating in the forest.

Douglas said that if you intend to photograph or watch wildlife, you need to do so from a safe distance.

Douglas said knowing the weather forecast is also a first line of defense in staying safe in the forest this summer, as thunderstorms and heavy rain can cause flooding of small streams and creeks within a matter of minutes. She added that relying on a cellular phone isn’t encouraged, as service in the forest is non-existent in many places.
