State Fire Marshal Lanny Applegate has been in his position since 2006 but he has now retired. Governor Mead appointed Michael Reed to replace Applegate beginning July 1. Mead claims that he chose Reed due to his extensive experience in law enforcement, administration, and emergency response.

Reed has spent 28 years in law enforcement, including ten years as Chief of Police in Rawlins. He has been trained in law enforcement, arson investigation, emergency management, and incident command. Reed also attended the FBI National Academy and served as President of the Wyoming Sheriffs and Chiefs Association. He currently serves as a policy advisor to the Governor and is honored to be associated with a professional agency dedicated to the safety of Wyoming's citizens.
