Johnson County Library Receives Award For Reading Program

The Johnson County Library has been recognized for a program they began last year for elementary school kids in Johnson County.

Book Buddies is a program where adults from the community volunteer their time and read to area kids.

Steve Rzasa, with the library, tells us more.

Rzasa and Mary Rhoades went to Casper last week and accepted the Agnes Milstead Award from the Wyoming Library Association.
The award, Rzasa said, recognizes outstanding programs or services for youth or young adults in the state.

The program's success with third grade boys last year has led to an expansion of the program this school year to include third grade girls. The numbers of kids in the program last year was 45 and this year it has jumped to 107 so far.

More volunteers are needed for the program, and all that is required is some time on a Tuesday or Wednesday and a desire to be around some kids and be willing to read. If interested, contact Steve Rzasa or Mary Rhoades at the library at 684-5546.

Rzasa said he has seen an increase in interest for books and reading from the kids since the program began.
