Earlier this week at the Legislative Forum in Sheridan, our local legislators received an update from Megan Degenfelder from Cloud Peak Energy, who own and operate three coal mines in the Powder River Basin, including the Spring Creek Mine, 35 miles north of Sheridan in Montana.

Degenfelder talked about how the export process will be different this year.

Degenfelder said the coal industry is facing some major headwinds.

She said the coal industry supports nearly 7,000 jobs in Wyoming, with an average salary of $80,000 a year, and that about 30 percent of the state’s revenue comes from the coal industry.
