One of Sheridan College's professors is looking forward to a special workshop and exhibition coming up next week.

Art teacher Tawni Shuler said she went to school and taught with Steve Johnson, who is an assistant professor of drawing at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. But, she said, that's not where they met. Their association began with graduate school at Arizona State University in Tempe, nearly a decade ago.

During that time, she said, she really had the opportunity to not only get to know him, but his process and his work. She called his technique “gestural, with a lot of movement,” and said his pieces are inspired by the birds and the beasts.

She said he'll be introducing his creative process on Wednesday night, from 5:30-6:30, in the Whitney building. The event is free and open to the public. Then on Thursday, he'll spend the day, from 10-4, working on unfinished drawings in the college's art wing hallway.

For this exhibition, she said, he encourages people to stop by and watch him work to see how his creations take shape. His final day is Friday, and that afternoon's been saved for the college students. She said he'll work with them by conducting an experimental drawing workshop.
