Peabody, Arch Lay Off Workers From Northeast Wyoming Mines

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - Nearly 480 coal mine workers in northeast Wyoming are being laid off. Arch Coal announced Thursday it is laying off 243 workers at its Black Thunder mine. That represents about 15 percent of its nearly 1,600 workers at the mine.

Peabody Energy is laying off about 235 employees at its North Antelope Rochelle mine. The layoffs represent about 17 percent of the nearly 1,400 workers at the operation.

Both mines are located in the coal rich Powder River Basin in Campbell County. Together, they produce about 200 million tons of coal a year. The downturn in the energy extraction industry also has prompted layoffs among oil and natural gas operators in Wyoming.
