Registration Open for Wiener Dog Races

A special event is coming back to Sheridan next week. Sheridan Media reporter Pat Blair has the story.

Wiener dog races will be held again this year in Sheridan, and Jocie Corcoran said people can register now.

The races will be on Tuesday next week, starting at 7 p.m. at Black Tooth Brewing. Registration and check-in starts at 6:30 p.m., but Corcoran is encouraging people to register ahead of time to stay on the race schedule.

Corcoran, who's owner of Muddy Paw Prints, said this is the seventh year for the races.

There will be five categories in the races this year. The new one, Beanie Wienies, is for dogs from 4 months to one year in age. Then there's Little Franks for dogs 1 to 3 years old, Oscar Meyers for dogs ages 4 to 6, Aged Bratwursts for those 6 years and older and Heinz 57 for mixed breed dogs that look like wiener dogs.

I asked Corcoran how the races got started.

In addition to the goodie bags, Corcoran said there will be a race-off among the winners of the first four categories, and the top dog in the races will get free dog food for a year.
