Sheridan County School District 1 is a growing district.

That's according to the district's Business Manager Jeremy Smith, who said the district's numbers are up by 50 students physically attending classes this year, plus more than 30 enrolled in the district's Cowboy State Virtual Academy.

Smith said the district ended last year with a little over 930 students, and this year, over 1,000 students are enrolled.

Smith said he thinks a major part of the increase is new families moving into the district, which operates schools in Dayton, Ranchester and Big Horn.

He said he thinks those communities have done a very nice job of being attractive places to live.

Smith said the school district has had a great first quarter. He said the changes, including a new school superintendent and new principals in several of the schools, have gone very smoothly.

He said the new superintendent, Pete Kilbride, has been a great leader for the district.
