Ace Builders Inc. of Sheridan has received the contract for the crawl space ventilation project at Tongue River Middle School in Ranchester, with a bid of just under $259,000.

The bid was awarded at the Sheridan County School District 1 trustees' board meeting Tuesday night. The problem, according to Trustees Chairman Gary Reynolds, was that water was seeping under the middle school building and creating an odor.

Jeremy Smith, who's the district's business manager, said there was a ventilation project in the early 2000s that addressed a portion of the crawl space.

Smith said the project will increase the airflow exchange. He said the intent is to protect the building structures from being impacted by rust and other problems caused by humidity.

He said the air quality will also be improved.

In other action Tuesday, trustees approved the district's English Learners plan, which included approval of two related policies.

According to Reynolds, school districts are required to provide a program for students for whom English isn't the primary language.

He said during the board meeting that the program is required whether the district has only two such students or 100.
