Candidates for Sheridan County School District 2 and the Northern Wyoming Community College District boards of trustees talked about why they're running for office and fielded questions from the audience Wednesday night at Sheridan High School.

Wednesday was the second candidates forum sponsored by the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce.

Eight candidates are running for four four-year terms on School District 2, which is the city of Sheridan and Story Elementary School in Story, and two are seeking a two-year unexpired seat on the board. Sheridan Media was able to interview Craig Achord, Tony Wendtland and Wayne Schatz before the forum started Wednesday. Wendtland said he's running for the board because he's on the board now as an appointee.

This will also be the first election for Achord, who was appointed to the board.

Schatz said he's running because he's been on the board for a while.

Also running for the four-year terms are incumbent Molly Steel and challengers Shane Rader), Dawn Sopron, Michael Sweeney and Seth Ulvestad. Candidates for the two-year term are Terry Burgess, who retired earlier this year from being an assistant superintendent at the district, and Servio Carroll, who wasn't at the forum.

During the forum, Sopron said she has a daughter at Sheridan High School, but she's interested in education for the entire student body. Rader said he's concerned about budget cuts that have affected the district. Rader said he supports the district's teachers, because they're the district's most important resource. Ulvestad said that he sees the budget as a key issue for the district.

Candidates for four four-year seats on the community college district are incumbents Bruce Hoffman and Walt Wragge. Also running are Rolf Distad, Elaine Henry, Gary Koltiska, Teddy Ladmirault, Mike Watkins and Debra Wendtland. All were at the forum. Sheridan Media will have a separate story on those candidates.
