Sheridan Man Pleads Guilty at Arraignment Hearing

A 36-year-old Sheridan man pleaded “guilty” to the charge of Felony Child Abuse at an arraignment hearing Tuesday in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan. According to the affidavit of probable cause, Emory Jarrell was arrested on December 16 for spanking a 4-year old on the buttocks so hard that it caused significant bruising. Jarrell was living with the mother of the child when the crime occurred and was considered a father figure, but is not the child’s biological father. Jarrell, while being questioned about the incident by law enforcement in December, admitted that he may have spanked the child too hard while disciplining the 4-year old for opening Christmas presents too early on the morning of the 16th.

The guilty plea was made as part of a plea agreement with the State that recommends a sentence of 2 to 4 years in prison, suspended in lieu of a split sentence of time served and three years of supervised probation. If the Court accepts the terms of the plea deal at sentencing, Jarrell will have spent approximately 90 days in jail. District Court Judge John Fenn ordered that a presentence investigation be conducted and set the date for sentencing for March 17 at 9 am. Jarrell’s bond was revoked and Judge Fenn remanded him to the custody of the Sheridan County Detention Center to await sentencing.
