The “shopportunity,” as it's being billed, to raise money for a local nonprofit organization that helps victims of domestic violence, is coming up this week.

The Shopapalooza benefit for the Advocacy and Resource Center of Sheridan is set for Thursday in the Whitney Center Atrium at Sheridan College. Rhonda Weber is the center's victims witness coordinator. She says they'll have a variety of items for sale. Here's how it works.

The shop will be open from 5:30-8. Tickets are $20, available at the door or in advance at the advocacy center on Coffeen Avenue. She said the center's mission is to empower people affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and other forms of violence to realize lives of choice, safety and freedom. So, the event is being held in conjunction with the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

She said there's still a misconception about what domestic violence is.
