Toys For Tots Campaign Under Way

The annual Toys for Tots campaign has started in Sheridan. Coordinator Tina McDougall said parents are registering, and donations of toys are being accepted at the program headquarters at 151 West Brundage Street.

The coordinator has asked people to bring new toys that are still in the original packaging.

She added donations of cash also will be accepted, and are appreciated.

She said this year she would like for people to donate fewer electronic games, and give more toys that can be used for outdoors and family interaction, such as bicycles, fishing gear, archery equipment, snowboards and sleds, board games and puzzles.

Toys are made available to low-income families to make Christmas brighter for children who otherwise would not receive toys for the holiday. The coordinator said the program last year helped 743 children, and this year, she would like to double that number.

She said families must provide proof of low income, and she would prefer that they register by Dec. 18. She is asking those who donate toys or cash to meet the Dec. 18 deadline as well.

Distribution day is the Saturday before Christmas, which will be Dec. 20 this year. Parents are asked to not bring their children when they come to pick out toys. Toys for Tots volunteers will be available with wrapping paper and ribbons, and can gift-wrap the toys.
