Depending on the weather, construction of the new John C. Schiffer Collaborative School building could start in March.

Sheridan County School District 2 trustees awarded the contract for the school last week, and Mathers Heuck, who's the district's facilities director, said the next step is for the state to approve the contract.

Heuck said the project schedule is pretty comfortable. The contractor, Groathouse Construction, has about 16 months to complete the work.

Students enrolled in the alternative high school are currently attending classes in Sheridan College, but Heuck expects them to be in the new school building starting in the fall of 2021.

When the building is completed, the school is intended for use not only by District 2 students but also students from Sheridan County School Districts 1 and 3 and the Johnson County School District as well.

Heuck said the new school building will be about 20,000 square feet in size and will be able to handle around 116 students.

Heuck said Groathouse Construction has a long and successful record of building schools in Wyoming.
