Funeral services for Nelda Straight, 83 year old Buffalo woman, who passed away Thursday morning at the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo, will be held Friday, April 8th at 10:00 a.m. at the Harness Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Alena Lamirato officiating. Visitation will be held from the funeral home chapel on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services to follow the funeral. Donations in Mrs. Straight’s memory may be made to the Bread of Life Food Pantry in care of the Harness Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo. Online condolences may be left at
Nelda June Straight was born on April 27, 1932, in a farm house near Waddam’s Grove, Illinois the fourth child and third daughter of Clifford and Bessie Broge. She attended grammar schools and graduated from Winslow Community High School in Winslow, Illinois with the class of 1949. After high school she worked for Burgess Battery in Freeport, Illinois. She and her sister Helen came West in search of adventure. She was married on June 9, 1951 in Buffalo to Albert Lee Straight and went to Alaska for a short time before moving back to Buffalo. Nelda took a job with the Veteran’s Home of Wyoming where she worked for 35 years. Lee passed away in April of 1993 and in 1997 Nelda retired from the Veteran’s Home and continued living at the mountain home that she and Lee built over fifty years earlier. She was a resident of the Amie Holt Care Center at the time of her death.
Nelda served her family, church and community and was known for her compassionate service. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend, homemaker and employee throughout her life. She volunteered at the Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, Toys for Tots as Christmas, and participated on prayer chains. She was a devout member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and baked for many fund raisers. She belonged to the Sit Sip and Sew Club, and considered her family to be her greatest accomplishment. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made many beautiful quilts for weddings and one for each of her twelve grandchildren. She enjoyed snowmobiling, watching wildlife, and gardening. She was an excellent cook and stated many times how thankful she was to the Lord for her many blessings especially her family.
She is survived by two sons, Chad Straight and his wife Linda of Buffalo and Michael Straight and his wife Stacy of Gillette; one daughter Wanda Blake of Shelley, Idaho; four brothers Eugene Broge of Freeport, Illinois, Allen Broge of Arizona, Lavern Broge and Norman “Bill” Broge both of Winslow, Illinois; one sister Helen Straight of Buffalo; twelve grandchildren and 27 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lee, one sister Virginia Mann; her son-in-law Merril Blake and two infant brothers, Gerald Lee and David John.
