Funeral services for Richard Finnerty, 78 year old Wyoming Native and current resident of Honolulu, Hawaii who passed away October 22, 2015 at the Straub Hospital in Honolulu, will be held Saturday, June 18th at 10:00 a.m. from the Summit Wesleyan Church in Buffalo with Pastor William Dunlap officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services to follow the funeral. He will be laid to rest along side his long time love, Sonnia Petersen. Richard Merle Finnerty was born June 06, 1937, in Redfield, South Dakota, to Merl and Myrtis Finnerty. As a young boy he moved with his family to Clearmont, Wyoming where he grew up and went to school. He graduated from Clearmont High School with the class of 1955. After high school he attended the University of Wyoming where he received a B.S. in Education in 1960. Upon graduation Richard enlisted and was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Air Force, where he served 28 years attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Richard was a fighter pilot, general’s aid, Department of Defense staff, and base commander, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he received two bronze star medals. Richard retired from the USAF in 1988 and remained in Hawaii, a state he loved so much, selling real estate. Richard loved the outdoors, scuba diving, hiking, and running. Richard also enjoyed spending time with his friends and fellow Elks. Richard was enthusiastic about genealogy, and published books on the Finnerty name.
Richard is survived by his mother, Myrtis Robbins of Buffalo; one daughter Julie Dolan and her husband Tim of Penryn, California; one son Richard Finnerty of Citrus Heights, Californa; one brother Brian Finnerty of Graeagle, California; two sisters Anita Schuman and her husband Neal of Buffalo and Sally Finnerty Miller of Honolulu, Hawaii; five grandchildren, Stephanie Becker and husband Gabe, Blake Crawford , Chad Finnerty, Brendan Dolan, and Cody Finnerty, all of the Sacramento area; two great grandchildren, Elise and Adelyn Becker and several nieces and nephews all in Buffalo. He was preceded in death by his father.
