Graveside Funeral Services for Ruthe Young, 93 year old Buffalo resident who passed away quietly Saturday evening at the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo, will be held Wednesday, August 28th at 2:00 p.m. in Willow Grove Cemetery with Bishop Kade Caturia officiating. Visitation will be held from the Harness Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Donations in Mrs. Young’s memory may be made to the Ogallala Indian College in care of the Harness Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo.
Ruthe Virginia Young was born on July 16, 1920 in Rochester, New York to Rutherford and Ellen Walker. She grew up and went to school in Rochester where she graduated from Jefferson High School. After high school she attended the University of New York where she received a Master’s Degree in Journalism. She was married quite young and they had four daughters. She was later divorced and took a job with Kodak where she met and married Harry Young. Harry and Ruthe made their home in New York where Ruthe took a job at the University of New York as a professor teaching Journalism. Harry passed away in 1961 and Ruthe continued on at the University until she retired. In 1964 she moved to Salt Lake City and lived between there and New Mexico for several years. She was married to Bruce Maxwell on October 11, 1989 in Sheridan, Wyoming and they made their home in Buffalo. Bruce passed away in March of 1990 and Ruthe continued living in Buffalo until the time of her death.
She was a member of the LDS Church and enjoyed spending time in the mountains, hunting and hiking.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Johnson and her husband Robert of Branch port, New York, Sharon Leightley of Salt Lake City, Utah and Sandra Sofar and her husband John of New York City; one stepson Charles Van Young and his wife Donna of Seattle, Washington; twenty-six grandchildren and forty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, one sister, three brothers and one daughter.
