Sheridan college Rodeo teams opens 2016 spring season

From SC Rodeo coach Marc Gilkerson:

The spring college rodeo season started off this past weekend in Torrington, WY.

The first rodeo of the spring is always a tough one it shows where your strengths and weaknesses are and what each individual needs to be focused on for the next rodeo.

We had a number of student athletes make it back to the short round which is great and we had some athletes that have been doing well in practice not do so hot at the rodeo, but that is rodeo you have to take the good with the bad and move on to the next.

The men’s point team only earned points from Tayte Clark in the saddle bronc riding splitting first in the first round with a 72 point ride. In the short round he didn’t draw very well and placed 3rd with a 63 point ride which also placed him 3rd in the average.

This moved Tayte to 4th in the CRMR standings right behind Sam Thurston. Other Sheridan College men that did well but weren’t on the points team were Colby Hetzel and Cody Ballek. Colby was heading for Preston Novak from Chadron State placed 2nd in the long round with a time of 6.3 seconds, they were consistent in the short round roping their steer in 6.5 seconds for 2nd place in the round and placed 2nd in the average earning Colby 150 points.

Cody roped with Teigen Finnerty from Central Wyoming College and they roped their first steer in 6.9 seconds placing 5th in the round they were 10.8 in the short round placing 5th again and they also placed 5th in the average earning 60 points.

The women’s team showed a lot of try and effort, with Tioni Erickson and Breanna Reimler both making it to the short round. Tioni made it back in the goat tying with a time of 7.9 seconds which split 4th, 5th and 6th place.

She then had a little bit of trouble in the short round but still managed to tie her goat in 8.6 seconds which placed her 6th in the round and 6th in the average.

Breanna Reimler just missed the short round in the goat tying placing just out of the top ten with an 8.5 second run. Breanna did make it back in the breakaway roping with a time of 3.3 seconds placing 8th in the round she missed her calf in the short round.

Lauren Rives from Buffalo, WY and Calby Hanson showed their try but missed the short round, which was tough with a split from 1st to 10th only being 7/10ths of a second. Breanna also made it back in the barrel racing in 9th place with a time of 15.69 but was unable to keep the barrels standing in the short round.
